Mitsubishi: Transmission Out ?? Wont go into gear?, pushing the car, cottman

Question
My 01 Galant seems to running fine (engine wise) but when i try to put it into gear (automatic) it only goes in park? Would that mean my trans is blown or is there something wrong like a defect or something?

Answer
Hi Jim,

When you say it only goes in P, I assume you mean it doesn't move. #1 cause of this is low on fluid. #2 is blown transmission. If you have reverse and no forward, it's likely cause by the forward planetary system or forward drive train. Visa-Versa with forward no reverse. But when it won't go in either direction, well that means broken axle or differential whereas it won't hold in park (meaning when in park you can push the car more than a couple of feet. If you start the car, put it in gear and the speedo goes up then the problem is most likely the axle and can be repair rather inexpensively) or it hasn't enough pressure to create a gear. Pressure is produced by the transmission or front pump. If the pump is not making noise and is working correctly there will be pressure in the transmission. This pressure is regulated by the EPC or Electronic Pressure Control solenoid. When it fails you will usually only have 2nd and reverse only. I recommend first check the level and condition of the fluid in neutral WITH THE EBRAKE ON! LOL. If it's low it means your leaking and add some, your transmission holds about 9 quarts. It will need to be about 3 quarts low to not move. If this takes care of it then find and fix the leak ASAP. If you run it low too many times you will fry the transmission and need an overhaul. Second, if it's not low, try putting it in park and pushing the car, if it rolls, you will likely just need an axle. If it is not low on fluid and doesn't roll in park then call 866-COTTMAN, press one at the recording and enter in your zip. They will be glad to help you. Hope I have provided some info you can use. Good luck, resubmit if you have any further questions.
