Pontiac: CV joints, GM cars, cv joints, gm fwd

Question
Harold:  The car in question is actually a 99 Olds 88, so I will understand if you ignore it (the Olds guys were maxed out), but the question would also apply to a Bonneville and probably a whole bunch of other GM FWD cars.  The car (app 75 kMiles) has developed a clicking sound that comes from the right wheel when turning right, even at low speed.  This is the first FWD car I have owned, so I am not all that familiar with CV joints, but is this a characteristic sound for CV joints beginning to get worn?  If I replace the right side, should the left be replaced at the same time, ie, the whole "axel" like is done with brakes?

Thanks,  Joe  20040627

Answer
Yes, the noise you described could be a cv joint starting to go but it could also be a lower ball joint. Check the ball joint by jacking up the car by the frame NOT the front suspension. It has to be hanging in order to check the ball joint. Shake the wheel that has the noise from side to side and up and down to check for play in the ball joint or any other front end parts. If everything is tight, then the noise is coming from the cv joint.
You do not have to replace both sides at the same time but you should check the other side for torn boots or grease leaking out of them.
Also when you are checking on parts, you might want to see about getting the whole half shaft. It is usually cheaper and easier to install than just the joint and boot kit.
If you need more help, just ask.
