Pontiac: Blown Fuses, blown fuses, 1987 pontiac 6000

Question
Hello. I have an electrical problem. I have a 1987 Pontiac 6000 SE and my courtesy circuit keeps blowing fuses. One day it just blew and ever since then it keeps on blowing new fuses. I want to know if you could help me fix it or should I take it to a repair shop. Thanks.

Answer
The only thing I can say is that it sounds like you have a part that might be causing a short somewhere and overheating the electrical lines causing the fuse to blow, or it could be a frayed wires, somewhere in the multitude of routing the wires from the courtesy fuse.  Usually, the most commmon reason for a fuse blowing is either a part going bad that has a short in it, or a short somewhere in the electrical wiring.
If you have installed any accesories such as driving lights or something and they are spliced into the courtesy part of the fuse block, that could be causing a problem to, if they are shorting out somewhere.

I can't actually tell you where to look, since MANY devices run through the courtesy fuse.  It's just a matter of going one by one until you find it.  It's the kind of thing most mechanics don't like wasting their time on, but if you do not have a factory service manual telling you everything that goes thorough that fuse, your best bet is to take it to a mechanic.
