Saab: Saab electrical, fuse one, digital voltmeter

Question
Jerry- I wonder if you can help me with this. I have had this 1989 Saab 900 turbo convertible for a few years now. Ever since I got it , it has some funny electrical problems that drains the battery no one seems to be able to answer. I pulled the fuse on the radio for example and that seemed to help it from draining on the battery for a while. Now the new battery does not hold a charge. Do you think this is an alternator problem?   Many thanks,  Eric

Answer
Eric:
It clear that there is an electrical leakage path discharging your battery; the question is where?
To isolate the "culprit" I would do the following. Using a digital Voltmeter on the "10 amp scale" connect each lead across the fuse for a particular used with the fuse removed. Thus, if there is any leaskage you can isolate it to an individual circuit. Of course you will need to remove each fuse, one at a time, and should measure zero current(except for the clock/radio fuse maybe). The meter must be on "AMPS" and one probe tip must touch each side of the fuse socket with the fuse removed. Also, the key should be out of the keyswitch and all doors closed and lights off.
Is is also possible that you have a "leaky" alternator. To test this, you will need to put the amp meter in series with the main alternator wire (after it is removed frrom the alternator terminal) with everything else off.
Once the specific area is identified, then its good old fashioned trouble shooting and physical inspection.
  Hope this helps,
