Saab: SAAB 900s wont start., saab 900s, corrossion

Question
Hi, I'm hoping you can assist with a problem I've got with my Saab 900S.  The car has stopped dead after having a few problems in the previous weeks which all seemed to be caused by the ignition switch.  Up until today when the ignition switch was turned to "ON" the dash lights would come on but would be dim, repeated on - off cycling of the ignition switch would rectify this and after a few attempts the ignition lights would come on correctly.  No matter what the condition of the ignition lights the engine would still crank as normal (However when the ignition lights were dim it would not start.)  I noticed when cranking under these conditions the odometer / trip meter would go out.  Despite this I could always get the car to start.  Today I reversed out of the driveway and the car stopped dead.  Now the ignition switch is still causing the same problems however I cannot get the odometer / trip meter to illuminate despite all other dash lights working correctly.  In this state the car still cranks fine but the engine will not start.  I've looked at the wiring diagram but cannot work it out.

Battery is new, alternator is good.  I'm 100% positive that neither are contributing to this problem, seems more like a faulty ignition switch / module or just something as basic as a wiring fault. - maybe even just some corrossion on a connection somewhere - if you could point me in the right direction it might just save me a lot of work.

I've pulled the ignition switch out and have cleaned it as best I can however this hasn't changed anything.

Thanks in advance,

   Richard.

Answer
Richard:
They typical "flow" of functional voltages goes from battery to ignition switch to relays to end-user components. From your description, it sounds like the problem is in the "area" of the relays which are between the ignition switch and end devices. I would therefore check them out.
This description holds for the older 900s (pre 1994) so I cannot be sure it applies to your vehicle since you have not specified the year.

   Hope this helps,
