Saab: Power steering loss, and dead battery, power steering pump, model saab

Question
Today while driving, I lost my power steering at the same time, the battery
light came on. I pulled into a gas station, and turned off the engine. When I
tried to restart it, the battery was dead. I had it jumped, and was able to drive
it home, but the car really struggled to make it, and the power steering never
returned. I did drive through a puddle/pothole, but I don't see how that can
explain my dead battery.

Answer
Allison:
You did not specify your model SAAB so I can only provide a generalized answer (with good likelihood of being accurate).
The only connection between your power steering and battery is the "alternator/power steering belt". It drives both components, energizing the power steering pump AND the alternator, which of course charges the battery.
So, I would check it, either by yourself (all belts should be tight and sound-looking), or by a mechanic. In any case, the fix ought to be simple and inexpensive.
 Hope this helps,
