Truck Repair: Fuel Pump, rusty bolts, chevy truck

Question
What does it take to change a Fuel pump on my 2002 Chevy truck? Would like to do this myself , but I want to know if there is anything special I need ?
Thanks!!

Dan

Answer
Hello Dan,
Access to the pump is the hardest part.
Two ways work, and each has its advantages.

You can either drop the tank, or move the bed.
Believe it or not, removing the bed, and moving it rearward a few feet is not all that bad, and the job can be done with the fuel tank full.
Dropping the tank is harder if there is much fuel in it.

Rusty bolts can help decide which way you do it also, as well as bed mounted equipment.

Neither way is all that hard, and either can be done in the driveway.

I assume you have isolated the problem for sure to be the pump? Nothing will tick you off as much as going to the effort of replacing the pump, and the new one acting exactly the same.

if you do get inside the tank, make sure ALL the wires are tight, including the rivets through the top part where the wires come from outside the tank. I have seen them loose, and actually be the problem, rather than the pump.
