Saab: 1989 Saab 900 convertible, saab 900 convertible, neutral safety switch

Question
Went to start the car this morning.  Key turned but it would not start.  Took the key out, put it back in and tried again and the ignition is locked.  Key will not turn.  I can move the automatic transmission lever from park into neutral but this has not helped.  Tried rolling the car back and forth...thinking there might be a neutral safety switch.  Still nothing.  Key is frozen into place and ignition switch will not turn in any direction and I cannot remove key.  Seen this before?

Michael:
Yeas, that is a 'classic' problem...there is a reverse lockout lever in the shift console housing that is activated by a hairspring that has been known to fail and thus result in your problem.  You'll need to remove the shift console, disassemble it, and knock out the offending lever (at the expense of a little less antitheft protection) since the reverse lockout protection will be disabled.   Not much of a loss,I think!
Some years ago I wrote a rather extensive reply to solution of this problem..try looking in the archives. If unsuccessful, I'll re-do the instructions. You'll need to fashion a special removal tool for the console nuts..a three cornered (castellated) cylinder...I have used a file and cheap, expendable socket, filed out for that purpose.
 Hope this helps,
