Saab: white smoke and will not start, exhaust piping, head gasket

Question

electric
i have a 87 saab 900 16 valve 2.2 liter non turbo.it had not been cranked for some time . when i cranked it  , a lot of white smoke come out . then it wouldnt crank again. the fuel pump wasnt working so it wasnt getting any gas to the cylinders, i strait wired the pump and it works , . at the fuse box the fuse was good for the pump but was no electric to it. i was thinking maybe the fuel injection ECU is bad . all the other electrical seems to be ok , coil and plugs and so. i checked for coolant in the cylinder chambers but didnt see any. any ideas ?   thanks David

Answer
David:

In order to accurately respond, please provide more specifics as follows:
a. When the white smoke appeared, how long had the engine been running (if at all)?

b. Did you try spraying starting ether into the intake port before trying to start the engine? This will shed light on any fuel delivery problems.

c. Do you have the means to do a compression test?

d. When you said "it wouldn't crank again", did you mean that it would not run again, or not even turn over as by the starter?

It could be a head gasket, but I think is more likely a fuel delivery problem. To be sure, you'll need to do a pressure test. Also, if you wish, I can send you a fuel system diagnostic procedure that you can do yourself, without any tools, sitting in the driver's seat. It will tell you the condition of the fuel injection firing circuit.

                  Hope this helps,

PS: The white smoke could be from an accumulation of moisture in the exhaust piping...sometimes happens when a car sits for an extended period
