Saab: saab, coolant water, power steering pump

Question
Hi i have Saab 9-5 1999,i was driving on the h/way when i noticed that the caution light and battery light came up on the dashboard,i also noticed the temperature was on its highest level and immediately the steering became so hard that  i had to turn it with full strenght.I topped the radiator in the morning and start the car the engine runs for 4 minutes and cutoff.I was unable to start the car since then.I also noticed the serpentine belt was little slack please help me with your experience. Thanks

Answer
Lekan:
It sounds like your serpentine belt, which drives the alternator, power steering pump, and possibly the water pump (I am not personally familiar with your particular model)has failed. While that accounts for your initial observations, it by itself does not account for the engine's inability to start and run thereafter, with one caveat:
If you had to add a great deal of coolant water, its possible your engine overheated, possibly damaging the head gasket, or even worse, warping the head.

How long did you drive the car after the initial observation of "hard steering, etc" occurred? Did steam or vapor emerge from under the hood?

If the answer to the above is "yes", then the head or head gasket as noted above is a likely culprit.
