Saab: 95 900SE Turbo conv. going through radiator fluid FAST, radiator fluid, saab 900se

Question
I have a 1995 Saab 900SE Turbo Convert. 5-speed. Lately, the Low Coolent light has been coming on every few days. In fact, I put a whole gallon jug of the 50/50 pre-mixed stuff in over a week recently. When I open the hood on a cold day I can see a whispy cloud that has a distinct smell of radiator fluid. As best as I can tell its coming an area approximately behind the oil fill cap, however, it doesn't smell like burning oil.  The temp. gauge is sticking right in the middle so I don't think I'm overheating, but the use of so much radiator fluid isn't normal. Has about 175k miles on it.

Answer
As I am not personally familiar with SAABS newer than 1990 900's I can only answer the question in a general way. Sounds like you have an external leak; on the earlier Saabs there were only two such places for such leaks, at the water pump and at one of the coolant hoses. The easiest way to spot such a leak is when the engine is running and HOT; pressure is built up and by careful inspection you should be able to locate the leak. After such determination, you may then decide to either fix it yourself or take it somewhere. In any case, don't delay; leaks only get worse and one day you might find yourself stranded with an overheated engine!!
          Hope this helps.
