Saab: steering, auto supply stores, rubber seals

Question
My daughter's 1996 saab turbo was sitting for 2 months in the yard. She took it out but the steeringis very stiff and hard to turn. What could it be and is it dangerous?

Answer
The problem is most likely in the hydraulic system which provides the power assist; There is a belt-driven pump which provides high pressure fluid to the steering rack; this fluid flow is regulated by a valve connected to the steering wheel; the flow rate and pressure influences a piston within the rack to provide the assist.
Most probably, one of the multiple rubber seals has either failed or  is leaking.
IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AS IS!!!
Besides the first step of checking power steering fluid levels (pump is located near the firewall on the driver's side)try the following:

Add a power steering "conditioner" available at auto supply stores such as Advance Auto of Autozone. After adding it, you'll need to work the wheel back and forth for quite a while (could be for an hour)until it begins to get easier to steer. Otherwise, a steering rack/pump replacement will be needed at a cost of $500-$700.
The above 'simple' fix has worked well for me.
