Toyota: 98 toyota tacoma manual trans, auto parts store, thermal breakdown

Question
Hi
I own a tacoma with 125,000 miles on it, and I just changed the oil in the 5 speed manual transmission. Now when I drive it for a little while I get a smell like hot or burning gear oil,-there was no smell before I changed the oil. The oil I put in was regular 90 weight from the auto parts store, Should I have gone with a synthetic instead? Can it be that some of the oil is still on the outside of the transmission and giving me the smell? Should I get it looked at by a service station?

Thanks

Answer
Alright, because I don't have any Tacoma information and wanted to answer you as fast as possible.

Was the oil the type specified by Toyota in terms of weight?  As far as the smell, did you drop the pan to replace the fluid or did you just drain from the drain hole?  Check the tranny and make sure that it isn't leaking from either the drain plug or around the tran's pan.

As far as a "Synthetic" fluid, well.. You know.. it's just for better viscosity and thermal breakdown.  IT COULD help with the burning smell assuming that it's the regular gear oil that's causing our current smell and not it leaking out or something.

Hope this helps. David D.
