Toyota: timing chain, toyota 4runner, fe engines

Question
I have a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner 6 cylinder 70,000miles.  Does it have a driving chain or timing belt and when does it need changing?
Thank You

Answer
Your 2001 Toyota 4Runner comes equipped with a 3.4L 5VZ-FE DOHC V6 engine.  It runs on a timing belt.  As far as that specific engine's recommended replacement schedule goes, every 60K you should replace your timing belt.  Roughly all Toyota engines recommend 60K intervals in changing your timing belt.

Remember, there's no way to know when a timing belt needs changing by just looking at it.  But, cracks, missing teeth, "string" visible in the rubber, or just that "worn" look, signals it's life is close to ending.

Be weary that neglecting that belt could cost you an engine.  5VZ-FE engines would run you about $2,200 and up WITH labor.

Timing chains on the other hand CAN last the life of the engine and rarely need changing but if it should, the chain alone is about 180 dollars and up.  300K would probably be the recommendation for a chain timing system.

Hope my answer helps:)
