Toyota: cold start engine noise in Rav4, toyota rav4, variable valve timing

Question
My 2001 Toyota Rav4 has made clicking sounds when cold started and under load since it was new.  The noises essentially vanish when the engine is fully warmed up although they are louder now than ever before (38,000 miles).  The noises, while acknowledged by my local dealer, are dismissed as "normal" since they go away when the engine is warm. The only thing Toyota has done to diagnose the problem (other than check the variable valve timing mechanism) has been to send a sample of the oil to a laboratory for analysis.  The laboratory report said everything was normal.  In my view, the problem represents a defect in the engine assembly and has negatively impacted the car's resale value. Do I have a case?

Answer
Hello,

sorry I don't know Rav4 engines very well, but my celica's engine does a rattling sound, this because of the belt tensioner. Already replaced but it's still here, I think it's normal, and doens't represent a problem.

Check the belt tensioner, or have it replaced, and see if it works!

Jack
