Volkswagen: wire going to gas tank sending unit

Question
I am using the Bentley manual green cover 1968-1979 VW type 2. I have a 1971 bus, and managed to disconnect the wire going to the gas tank sending unit. The brown wire is on the transaxle side of the fire wall, and is about 5 inches long. What is puzzling is that I can't find a hole that it should go in to connect to the other piece that is connected to the sending unit. I went to my repair guy, and he had a later model bus that had both the engine and gas tank out. There was a hole in the top of the right rear(as you look at the rear) wheel well which is where the wire went on that year. I can find no such hole in my bus, so I am reluctant to go any farther. I know with the 1971, you have to pull the engine to remove the panel to access the gas tank, or cut a hole in the sheet metal above the sending unit to access it that way. I simply can't find where the wire exits the compartment to attach to the wire from the harness. Thanks

Answer
Hi Michael,

I'm not too sure which wire you are talking about.  However, I've attached the wiring diagrams for your bus, which show where each belongs.
