Volkswagen: 1978 VW Bus, vw bus, oil seal

Rick, I have been told that I need to replace the oil seal in my bus (after driving through the mountains oil was spewing all over the back of the bus, previous owner said it was oil seal which he had to have replaced twice).  How do I replace it and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?  Also, while driving it up onto the UHaul I had to rent to get my baby home, I heard something pop and then she wouldn't go into gear...please say it's not the transmission.  Thank you! Hard to find advice on my Bus!

 Generally if the engine keeps blowing seals this is due to improper engine breathing.  There may be a clog in the oil filler breather hoses, which results in abnormal the internal engine pressurization.
 As far as the transmission, I can't tell you what you won't allow me to say (ha).  Seriously, it may be just the linkage from the shifter has come loose somewhere between the stick and the transmission, not the actual transmission, hopefully.
