Volkswagen: 73 Karmann ghia, manifold gaskets, vacuum lines

Question
QUESTION: Engine starts and runs for about 2 minutes until the choke opens. I have rebuilt the carb, finally bought a rebuilt. Dwell OK, timing OK, new plugs, new points, new plug wires, new fuel pump, vacuum lines checked and/or replaced, new intake manifold gaskets. It will run only at about 1500-1800 RPM. I am running out of ideas. Any ideas welcome.

ANSWER: Gordon,

It sounds like either the intake manifold gaskets are leaking or it has an air leak elsewhere.

Try spraying some starter fluid on the intake where it meets the head while it is running.  If you get a change in engine speed, you found the problem.

Keep a fire extinguisher on hand for safety.

Good Luck.

QUESTION: It has new intake manifold gaskets and I have tried the spray but no difference. It is hard to spray down by the head so there could still be a problem there. I am in the process of removing the manifold to see if there is a crack in it someplace. I am thinking about replacing the steel gaskets with fiber gaskets. Steel gaskets seem like a bad idea. I found a place which sells fiber gaskets at $.70 each but $12 freight so I am going to cut my own.

Answer
Gordon,

Did you check the rubber boots that connect the manifold pieces?  Sometimes they get holes in them.

In addition, improper timing will cause a stall situation.  Double-check the timing, and make sure that the proper vacuum hose(s) are blocked according to your distributor type.

www.wolfsburgwest.com

has a great technical page which shows the correct timing by distributor number.

Let me know how you make out.

Good Luck,

Ron
