Volkswagen: oil pump, low oil pressure, pressure indicator

I have a 2001 Passat and would like to know what are signs that the oil pump is geeting bad? Also was does the term sludged mean?

 The "Low oil pressure" indicator would light (or flash) if the pump were going bad, especially at low RPMs.  Sludged means the oil is too thick, typically because of contamination from not being changed on a regular basis (every 3000-5000 miles.)
