Volkswagen: 1974 VW Bug AutoStick, vacuum operation, diaphram

Question
I have been working on a 1974 Bug.  Runs great and for about 50 miles it drove great.  Now Autostick is an issue.

Symptom:  After starting engine with foot on break car will not go into gear.  Engine stalls when you try to move shifter to any position other than neutral.

Parts Replaced:  Installed new solenoid for vacuum operation and then tried a new diaphram (Note: Old diaphram was torn).

I confirmed that when you move the shift lever you get 12V DC to the solenoid that puts vacuum to diaphram.  Also after replacing diaphram I hear a drum like sound when I move the shift lever ( I guess this means diaphram is moving).  But car still wants to stall and does most of the time.

Answer
Eric,
The symptoms sound like the servo(you called it the diaphragm) may not be operating, not properly connected to the clutch operating lever, or not getting enough vacuum.  Look for any place in the system for possible leaks.  The other possibility is the control valve needs adjustment.  A low possibility is the torque converter is totally locked up, which of course would need to be replaced.
