I recently bought a 99 vw jetta gls and was curious to know if all gls came standard with keyless entry, because I was only given a key.

I think VW was using banjo keys not all in one flip that year.  The all in one flip will work, but make sure you get the one with the oval button pad, not the square.  It will also have the key chain loop on the corner, not all the way across the top.  There are lots for sale on ebay.  Programming is easy, but you need two cut keys, one for the door and one for the ignition.  Finding keyblanks for the flip is easy.  Finding someone to cut it for you is not.  Just call every hardware store and locksmith until you find one with a sidewinder machine.
