Volkswagen: 6-volt or 12-volt, 12 volt systems, brushes

We recently purchased a 1971 Super Beetle.  We are trying to replace the generator brushes.  How can we tell if this is 6 or 12 volt?  Thanks!

Congratulations on your purchase.  All VW's from 1968 on are 12-volt systems.
