Volkswagen: 1978 VW Super Beetle G Light Belt Snapped, generator light, cooling system

I was driving my bug on the highway when the generator light came on - continued to run ok, drove about 10 more miles MAX to get it home, engine died in driveway. Burned rubber smell - went to investigate and belt snapped and torn in several places. Advice?  Also smoke coming off engine...complete novice and new owner....HELP!

Hi Melissa,

That belt also runs the cooling system.  Hopefully, no damage was done there.   What you need to do is to order a couple of new belts. (spares are always good!)

If you need help on how to actually install the belt, let me know.

However, do not attempt to drive it anywhere, as again, that belt turns a fan in the back which cools the motor.
