Volkswagen: 2002 Jetta VR6 24 VALVE no reverse when cool, automatic transmission fluid, transmission shop

Question
hi Ron, i have a 02 jetta vr6 with an automatic transmission. After i start the car and put it into reverse, the reverse will not work. There's a timer between the speedometer and the rpms after it reads about 10 minutes idling the reverse works fine and will keep working fine till i let the car sit for a couple of hours. Then it repeats the process. Once running the car shifts fine.  Note: car did have a low battery and was replaced with an ordinary one. I would greatly appreciate your help.

Answer
Hi Abel,

The first thing you need to do is check your automatic transmission fluid level.  (this must be done when the engine is warm)  If you need fluid, check your owners manual and top off with fluid recommended for your vr6.

If that is not the problem, go have your transmission fluid drained, FLUSHED, and filter replaced.

If none of these procedures corrects the problem, your valve plunger for reverse may be sticking within the transmission until heat expands the chamber.  This would have to be serviced by a transmission shop.

Good Luck.

Ron
