Volkswagen: 1972 Bus, shift linkage, bentley

Question
I have a 1972 Bus that won't stay in first gear.  Other than that, it runs fine.  Could it be something as simple as replacing the shifter bushings?  I just bought it, so I don't know how old the transmission or shifter are.  The engine was rebuilt 30K ago.  Also, is it really cheaper to replace a transmission than it is to fix one?

Answer
David,

If it keeps popping out of first gear, check the following:

1) Get the Bentley book and make sure the shift linkage is adjusted properly.

2) Make sure the bushings are not worn, and renew if necessary.

Most likely, however, it sounds like you are going to need a new transmission.  You can expect to spend about 450-500 for a rebuilt tranny, that will last the life of your bus.

If you need any suppliers, let me know and I'll be glad to furnish them.

Take Care,

Ron
