Steering Column Repair: El Camino Ignition Swap Problem, chevy el camino, tilt wheel

Question
I have a 1984 Chevy El Camino with the tilt wheel. I'm trying to replace the ignition. I turn the key to the "run" position and I've removed the steering wheel, horn, and the plastic cover. I can't get the lock plate to depress hardly at all so removal of the clip is proving problematic. I've got the U-shaped tool so it shouldn't be causing this much headache. Do you have any tips/suggestions for removing the lock plate? I feel like I'm missing something here. Also, my shift lever has a lot of play in it and when I go from park to any other gear the lever hits the wheel. Is there any way I can adjust it so it won't hit the wheel?

Answer
Hi Scott:

The compression of the lock plate only allows for about 1/16-1/8 of an inch normally.  You should be able to get a right angle pick on either end and spread is just enough to grab under or behind it.  It does take some effort and without experience it can be challenging.
As far as your shifter looseness, this is usually caused by a bad shift lever spring.  We have and sell these here:

Also, we have recently uploaded some videos on our company website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the tilt column you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.
