Volkswagen: fuel, rubber elbow, vw type 2

we have no manual :) We just bought a 1978 vw type 2 bus. We have a issue that when it starts it only idles real rich, if you touch the gas peddle it stulls (dies, stops)If it starts right back up only runs black with smoke coimg out.
Loads up won't excellerate.
Please help I want to drive him.

Hello,

Check the intake air sensor (the thing that looks like an upside down waffle-iron).   Make sure that the wire is hooked up and the contacts are clean.   Also check all the tubes, hoses, etc. that go into the large rubber elbow.  


Also, check out the air filter and make sure that is ok.
