Volkswagen: 91 GtI Rattling, improper lubrication, exhaust muffler

Question
Ron,
My 1991 Golf GTI makes this awful rattling noise when I go over significant bumps in the road. It does it inconsistently, as in not all the time. I brought to it my local guy who is very honest but not an expert in VW's. He said it was the heat shield around the catalytic converter. He dismissed the notion of it being the front end saying that the front end was in excellent condition, and I agree with him on that point. After referring to my Haynes manual it says that it could be improper lubrication of the rack and pinion steering. So my question is if it is the heat shield what can I do to stop the rattling short of replacing the cat? The noise is driving me nuts! Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
Hello Pierre,

I must agree with your mechanic.  This is really characteristic of a loose heat shield over your cat.  You do not need to replace the whole assembly!

Bring it to an exhaust/muffler shop and have them secure it.

The cost shoud be under 50.00 (USD).

I have received many inquiries about the same sound on GTI Golf's and in all cases it has been that heat shield.

Let me know how you make out.  Don't worry too much about it, as it's not an expensive repair.

Take Care,

Ron
