Volkswagen: 75 Westy trans., haynes manual, shift pattern

Question
i have a '75 westy, and the problem i'm having is, when i put it in reverse it feels like it engages at the stick, but when i let out the clutch i get neutral. this does not happen all the time, but alot, maybe 25-30% of the time. when it happens, i can somtimes get it in r by sort of going through the shift pattern a little and put it back in r, or put it in firt or second, let out the clutch a little, or bump the tranny a little, and stuff like that. like i said earlier, when it goes in r, it feels the same as when it does not, and it does not pop out of gear, or do anything out of the ordinary when reverse engages, and when it doesn't, it's just like nuetral. if this matters, i have a stock 2.0 from, i think a '76 bus, but the tranny is original to the vehical. thanks for your time and any suggestions you may have on this matter and do i need to remove my engine and trans. thanks.

Answer
Hi Brian,

Use either a Haynes Manual or a Transporter Shop manual to adjust the gearshift plate on the floor.

This is a fairly simple adjustment, but you will need to see the pictures in the manual in order to properly align the shifter.

Problem solved!

Take Care,

Ron

P.S.   If you do not have a shop manual, they are readily available on E-bay.
