Volkswagen: 1996 Jetta check engine light, auxiliary inputs, other vehicles

Question
Hello,
The Check Engine Light is on in my 1996 Jetta. I read the codes, there are two of them:

P1582- Manufacturer controlled vehicle speed, Idle control, and auxiliary inputs

P0171- System too lean (Bank 1)

Can you tell me what these codes mean, how urgent they are to be fixed, and maybe a ballpark figure on what I can expect to pay at a repair shop to fix them? And any other hints or advice, etc.

Thanks,
Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

Replace the O2 sensor, this usually kicks on these lights.  Why?   I don't know, but I have had several other vehicles with this same error codes.

In all cases, an O2 sensor solved both check engine codes.

Let me know how you make out,

Ron
