This GLS has a problem with the alarm where no matter locked or unlocked, the alarm system is "armed."  Of course, when it is on, the car won't start. I have found that if I turn the lock to the unlock position and hold it there the alarm goes off and the car car be started. So now I am carrying two keys. One for the door lock and the second for the ignition.

The car has been great, but at 10 years old and almost 150,000 miles, I really don't want to spend a hole lot of $$ to get this fixed.  I'd just as well disable the alarm system permanently.

Any ideas on what I can do? I'm pretty technically savvy.

Hi Dave, the following instructions may help you re-program your key, which may be causing the problem,  try this:

1) Sit in the car with the engine off and your driver side window rolled down. (so you have access to the outside lock)

2) Insert the new key into the ignition.

3) Insert the little valet key in the driver side door lock (outside the car)

4) Turn the valet key like you are locking the car, but hold it there.

5) While holding the outside key in lock, press the unlock button on your new remote for 2-3 seconds.

6) Let go of the button.

7) Press the unlock button again for 2-3 seconds. Now the code should register.

8) Let go and you should hear an acknowledgement beep. (the alarm honk/beep)

If resetting the key dosen't allow the alarm to disable / trigger the disable system of the alarm, I'd just disconnect the system.

Let me know how you make out.

Ron:

thanks for the info. However, this will not work with this particular car.  There is no remote and the keys are just plain old double-cut without any embedded safety/security device so there is nothing to program. any other suggestions?  Or how does one disable the alarm without affecting anything else?
Thx. Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

Are you absolutely sure this is the VW installed system?  If that's the case, than, I'll do some more research and contact someone at a dealer with disabling instructions.

Sorry the other steps didn't help,  didn't realize you were pre-remote!
