On days when the air temp is hot my 96 Jetta has trouble starting. I
turn the key and all the electronics work but it doesn't even try to
turn over. I keep turning the key on and off and eventually it will
turn over and start. sometimes it takes a dozen or more attempts.

On a cool day, it will start first time every time.

Hi Stephen,

Please let me know if this is a diesel or gasoline engine.   Makes a big
difference.  If it happens to
be a Diesel - it is a common problem, and here is a link to some folks
with the same problem
and how they fixed it:

Otherwise, let me know and I'll continue my reseach for you.

Good Luck!

Ron

Thanks - it's gas.

Answer
Hi Stephen,

On the manifold there is a temperature sensor, with a round-like plug in it.

When the motor is hot, carefully unplug the sensor.   Try to start the engine.

If it kicks over, you found the problem.   They cost about $49.95 or less and create this fault about 90% of the time.

Let me know how you make out.

Ron
