Volkswagen: No spark at spark plugs, coil pack, golf mk3

Question
1993 golf mk3 gl 1800cc

The car refused to start the other day because there is no spark at the spark plugs. First thoughts were that the coilpack had gone but after changing this the problem is still occuring. Found out that only 3 volts is going into the coil pack, which seems a tad low, so thought it would be the ECU. Today i tried a different ECU but still only 3V is making it to the coil pack. What would you suggest is the reasoning behind my lack of sparking spark plugs?
Thanks very much
Paul

Answer
Hi Paul,

I would suspect the wiring, at this point.  Do you have a shop manual?

If so, see where the power to the coilpaK comes from.  Run a temporary wire from destination to destination.   Now measure the voltage.

Next, make sure that the ground is completely clean.   You may need to take it off and either sand the connection and connection surface lightly.   It sounds more like a resistance problem than anything else.

Please let me know how you make out.

Go get 'em!
