Volkswagen: horn sounds spontaneously on 1999 cabrio, spontaneous behavior, steering wheel

The horn on my daughters Cabrio statred "beeping" spontaneously, ususally occurs only in 1st or 2nd gear, it may beep briefly or stay on for several seconds. She has been quite embarassed several time by the horns spontaneous behavior. I have removed the fuse for the horn. Any ideas what may be causing this?  THANKS

Hi,

It's most likely the horn contact under the steering wheel.  The problem is, there is an air-bag under there and that is something I'd stay away from.

It could deploy, and it would be dangerous.

This may be one of those occasions where the dealer should really look at it.

(not a run of the mill garage, a true dealer).
