Volkswagen: Car Judders in first gear, gear changes, intake pipe

Question
2004 MK5 VW Golf 1.4 S Petrol (UK Spec) with 19,000 miles on the clock.

Basically when I take off in 1st gear (especially when cold) the car judders almost as if it is going to conk out.  I have already changed the air filter and plugs and this has made a good difference but it is still happening.  Gear changes thereafter can be a bit ropey and it is generally hard to have a good smooth drive in the car.

Also when the car is cold it holds on to the revs during gear changes and will surge for about 5 minutes untill warm.  Once I start the car from cold and leave it for 1 minute these problems are not as noticeable but still there.

Answer
Sorry, it sounds alike a possible temperaure sensor fault, it should be a 4 pin green / black "D" shaped plug in the water flange on the side or the front of the cylinder head. the only other problem may be a throttle body issue, remove the air intake pipe and see if the throttle valve is clogged with oily sludge, if so clean it out with WD40 or similar.
