Volkswagen: 1991 golf turn signal indicator, haynes manual, turn signals

Question
Hi Ron, I realize now that I didn't explain the problem as well as I could.  The indicator light on the dash is on ALL THE TIME, not just when I turn on the signals.  So none of the signals are working at all and the hazards aren't working either.  I suspect it's the relay.  Do you know which relay controls the turn signals?  There is nothing written on the relays other than white numbers so I can't tell which one to replace.  If I just bought a new one would it be obvious?  Thanks!

Hi.  The turn signal indicator light on my 1991 Golf GL dashboard stays on when I turn on the turn signals.  The turn signals are not working at all.  The fuse looks fine to me.  I pulled the fuse yesterday and put it back in, and the signals worked.  Then today, they stopped working again.  Any ideas?

Hi Sean,

Clean off the fuse contacts with a little sand paper or an emory board.   Try moving the fuse when the signals are blinking.   If they stop working when you move the fuse w/your fingers,  it may be just a bad contact.

Next, make sure all of the bulbs are blinking at an equal brightness,  and all are functioning.  A bad bulb can cause the same condition.

Finally, if all that fails, there is a relay (about $45.00) that controls the blinking circuit.   If the above remedies do not work,  check the Hazard lights.   If they fail to operate as well, replace the blinker relay.

It's not a very complicated system, so, process of elimination here should help you out.

Good Luck, and let me know how you make out.

Thanks,

Ron

Answer
Hi Sean,

Off the top of my head, I'm unsure where that relay is.  However, I can tell you how to find it:

1) Get the Haynes Manual for a 1991 Golf.  In the "ELECTRICS" section, you will find exact details where the relay, and all other related components are located.

2) If you don't want to go get the book, there may be a website specific to your car, try Google or a similar search engine via the Web.

Final note, check all of the bulbs prior to replacing the relay.  Sometimes, a bad bulb will cause the entire blinker system to run awry.  (An ohmmeter or visual inspection of bulb filament will help you tell if you have a blown or malfunctioning bulb)

Please let me know how you make out.

- Replace the relay.
