Volkswagen: 77 Beetle, retrofitted with carb / PICT 3, screw adjustment, pilot valve

Question
77 beetle has been having idle problems for some time. Finally found intake manifold loose. New carb kit. Gas ok. Fire ok. Still will not idle. High RPM has some backfire / miss.
1)What is the starting point for the bypass screw adjustment
2) Pilot valve functional
3) any ideas?

Answer
Mr/Ms. Burkhalter,

First, my apologies for the delay.  Was out with an unexpected illness.  I don't like to leave folks hanging, so again, my apologies.

Now, your car.

Let's try this step:

1) Get a fire extinguisher.

2) Have someone start the car.

3) Carefully spray carb cleaner/or starting fluid (thru the red tube attched to nozzle) around where the intake manifold meets the head.

4) More times than not, the leak is there, although you said it's fixed...idling should not be such a problem.

5) As you spray in those areas the engine will most likeley pick up speed. That will show you where the leak is.

Be careful.

Next, I need some information:

1) What kind of fuel pump are you using, since you have converted a fuel-injection engine to a carb?

2) What timing setting are you using, as well as type of distributor.

Well get it fixed.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Ron
