Can you give me some direction on how to replace the driver side headlight housing for a 2001 VW Passat? It looks to me like the size of the housing is larger than the opening which would require me to remove a substantial portion of my fronet end to get the thing in- is this correct or am I missing something.

Thanks

i am afraid to say, that as far as i am aware you need to remove the bumper cover to gain adequate room and access the fixings. this is achieved by carefully removing the front grill (including the bonnet pull handle) and removing the now revealed Torx bolts. also there are three bolts under the front of the bumper / splitter. there are also four torx screws on each side of the bumper (in the wheel arch, one screw goes upwrds on in the back corner of the bumper and into the wing. note you may need to pull the plastic wheel arch liner out a little to gain access) then there may be a torx bolt at a 45 degree angle upwards behind the lower grill trim on each side. to remove the trim you need to pull or gently pry it out with a screw driver. hope this helps.

If you were to rate the difficulty of this job on a scale from one to ten, with ten being the most difficult, what rating would you assign?

Thank you.

Answer
i would say on a scale of 1 to 10, this job would be about a 6. you will need a flat screwdriver with a blade about 6mm to 8mm wide, a Torx 20, torx 25, torx 27 and a torx 30. ( would advise a set of insert bits for a magnetic / interchangeable head screw driver ). as far as i am aware that is about all the tools you need. be advised some of the larger bolts may be tight.
