Volkswagen: 94 Golf III oil pressure, wiring loom, oil pickup

Question
John,
I'm having real trouble with this 4 cylinder gas Golf III. It's my girlfriend's car. I'd normally do the work, but i was out of town and I had to send it into the local shop.

The oil pressure light was coming on intermittently when the engine is hot(it's summer here). happens independently of engine speed as far as i can tell.

The oil pressure sensor was replaced and the wiring was checked. the shop said the baffle in the oil pan was crumbled and blocking the oil pickup. they replaced the baffle, the oil pump, new oil, new filter. later the probem persisted, they replaced the screen on the pickup because they thought it was gummed up.

So now it's still an issue.

any ideas about root cause on this one? I was thinking this may be an issue that has some VW specific root cause that i'm not familiar with. Computer? that doesn't sound right, but i'm stumped.

Thanks,
Rich

Answer
has the oil pressure being physically checked? it should be around 1.4 to 2 bar at idle when the engine is hot. if this is not the case, then there could be any number of causes. if the pressure is correct, then there has to be an electrical problem. (ie wrong switch fitted or a fault in the wiring loom between the switch and the dash panel)
