Volkswagen: 1967 Hanamag Silver Streak/Recreational Vehicle, industrial tractor, optonline net

Question
-------------------------Unfortunately I do not have any pictures of the RV.  It is all aluminum on the outside and is shaped like a "twinkie".  It isn't the type of trailer that you pull behind your vehicle.  It is the kind of RV that has a drivers seat and a passenger seat.  I will try to get a picture of it.  On the front grill it has the word HANAMAG on it and on the back of the RV it has the words Silver Streak on it.          Thank you very much  for your input.          Sincerly, Norma          a Followup To

I am looking for any information on a 1967 Hanamag Silver Streak/ Recreational Vehicle.  I think it was made by Volkswagen.  It has a bathroom w/shower and toilet.  It has a kitchen and sleeping area.  It has air conditioning and everything in it works.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.        Sincerly, Norma

Hi Norma,

If you can send me a picture of it, I can see a bit more clearly what you are talking about.

my e-mail is:  ronwolff@optonline.net

If it is a fabrication from VW, it would have been an official 'sub contractor' that VW hired to make such an RV.

Some examples of companies VW subcontracted out to:

Karmann
Ghia
Westfalia
Puck
Devon
Riviera
KOOL
DSP
EMPI

These names range from sporty convertibles, to campers, to Air Conditioners. Hanamag is not ringing a bell.

Send a couple of pix, and I'll be glad to research further. My apologies for the delay, I was trying to find the name online.

Have a great day!

Ron

Answer
Hi Norma,

VW did not make these RV's, however, I did do some research for you.

1.) Silver Streak was the name of the company that made the actual "Twinkey-shaped" RV itself.  It went out of business in 1996.

2.) Hanamag was an industrial Tractor/Dozer/Truck Manufacturer in Racine, WI., which was taken over by a company by the name of "Massey", which was again sold to a company named "Terex" in 1981.

My guess is that someone custom made the Silver Streak on a Hanamag body to create an RV.

The interesting articles I read stated that they were often bright aluminum, with a yellow line down the side and a vintage 'aqua' interior.

You will find these Silver Streak Links interesting:

It sounds like a very rare and valuable piece of machinery.  You can be sure that HANAMAG was the company which built the drive-train (wheels, engine, brakes, transmission, body, etc.) and Silver Streak built the "Aluminum Twinkey" with all it's interior and fittings.

I hope this helps, sounds like you have a real gem.
