Volvo: S40 Brake Vacuum Pump, electric vacuum pump, vacuum leak

Question
I have a 2000 S40 Turbo. After having the brakes serviced (pads and rotors), it started giving me problems. Sometimes when pressing the brakes, they would go almost to the floor.  When it first started, I could pump the brakes, but now it is so bad, I cannot even get the car out of gear.  I know this part was recalled, but it has expired.  I would like to know if this is something I could change myself, the location of the part and how hard it is to change.  I have some mechanical knowledge, just not on Volvos.  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Tamara,
Look under the brake booster and you will find an electric vacuum pump. There will also be vacuum lines coming off the pump. It is in a tight place, so there is some difficulty to the replacement. First though I would make sure that there is not a vacuum leak in the system before replacing the pump.
