Volvo: 96 850 flashing arrow check engine light, toyota prius, clunker

Question
QUESTION: The mechanic says he's getting code 750. Says it's either bad wiring or, gulp, the transmission...

ANSWER: Kelly,
Yes I have seen many of those transmissions go bad. In my area there is no one that can rebuild them. If you think the car is worth the money get a reman trans from Volvo. You may want your shop to check the wiring more closely before getting the trans.

QUESTION: Will let you know how it pans out - he is checking the wiring and expects the job to cost about $200 - If it;s the transmission then I think it's time to scrap the car - pity it doesn't qualify as a clunker! Am looking at a Toyota Prius or Matrix to replace it...

ANSWER: Kelly,
Yes too bad it does not qualify however some dealers seem to be giving there own form of  rebates. Hope that all works out for you.

QUESTION: Some good news I think! Mechanic says it is the transmission range selector and he can fix it for $400

Answer
Kelly,
Ok that in Volvo language is the gear position sensor, a common failed part. There are many contacts inside of it and over time the connections fail and start flipping fault codes. If the fluid is looking dark in color you may want to consider a fluid flush. Flushing with a machine removes all the fluid and replaces it.
