Volvo: 97 Volvo 850 AWD manual transmission, volvo 850 awd, prop shaft

Question
I have a 1997 Volvo 850 AWD (Canadian wagon)with 170,000km, 2.5L 20v engine. I believe that the fuel pump has failed.
My reasoning is that there is no fuel pressure at the injector rail, there is no sound from the fuel pump when the ignition is turned on and there is power at the fuel pump connector below the front section of the rear floor pannel (tested with an old pump from a 1995 850 GLT).
I have previously changed the fuel pump on the 1995 850 but changing the pump on the 1997 AWD 850 appears to be much more difficult because of its location.
Could you please advise the following:
1. Does the fuel tank have to be lowered to enable the pump to be removed?
2. If the answer to 1. is 'yes' does the rear prop shaft also have to be removed?
3. Are there after market fuel pumps available - if not would a pump for an AWD 70 series with the same engine work?
4. I have seen a similar situation where a pump access opening was cut in the vertical section of the floor pan behind the driver's side rear passenger seat. Would this create a structural problem?
5. A last thought - have you seen any problems with the wiring between the pump and the connector below the removable rear floor section? The wires appear to be in a pretty dirty area open to water splashing etc.
Thank you for your interest

Answer
Keith,
Yes it is best to remove the driveshaft it will help to lower the tank. Try to have a little gas as possible in the tank. As for aftermarket pumps personally I would not use one. I have heard of many problems with aftermarket pumps not fitting well and not lasting. The AWD pump should be the same one. I am sure that cutting a hole in the floor pan would work well especially if a cover was made to reseal the hole. The only problem I have seen wiring wise is once someone had so many heavy bulky things in the truck/rear area and they had broken the electrical connection. Although inspect the wires as closely as you can to be sure that they are in good shape.
