Volvo: Vovlo XC90, vovlo xc90, volvo service

Question
Bought a 2005 Volvo in July 2008 with a full Volvo Service history and a 1 year warranty with 36,000 miles on the clock .Last service was in July 2008 at the Volvo garage that sold me the car. 8 months later the steering began to make a noise the garage said that it was the engine mounting and steering rack which the agreed to fix under the warranty.  However, they also found that the oil pump was broken and oil was leaking onto cam belt, plus the brake pads and discs also needed replacing as down to the recommended bare minimum of 3mm. Neither covered under warranty and cost of £1500 to fix. I have only driven 4,000 miles since i bought the car. I was advised that the next service was due at either 12,000 miles or 1 year which ever came first.Surely the brakes must have been very low when they sold me the car? Or do XC90 have a habbit of wearing out brakes after such a short distance? Am i very unlucky? Or have i a leg to stand on?

Answer
Jules,
At the time you bought the car the brakes were above the minimum thickness and considered good. So at this point if you drove the car  until the brakes started to grind then you would get all the possible use out of them, and still have to replace the same as far as parts. You could call them on this to see if they will help with the cost. I have not known these cars to wear out brake so quickly. There could be a caliper problem or could you be a person that is hard on the brakes? Ride the brakes? Or were the brakes only slightly above the minimum thickness when you bought it, we don't know.
If there is an oil leak and it is not covered what warranty do you have? Did you get a warranty without coverage of leaking seals? Read the warranty and talk to the service manager to see if you can strike a deal.
