Volvo: volvo sat for long, volvo 240, water in the fuel

Question
I have a 1985 volvo 240 turbo It sat for about 8 years and now I got it
runing and everything is geting colgged can I just put a couple bottles of
fuel injetion cleaner to clean the system or is there a other way

Answer
Sam,
That may or may not work. You do not know what is causing the clogging. I would suspect the fuel tank is all rusted inside and that is the major cause. Other things will also have rust in them, like the fuel distributor, the control pressure regulator, etc. What I am saying is that you may not clean things up enough now that all those part are contaminated. I once had a vehicle that had gotten water in the fuel tank and had to replace all those components. Dropping the tank and having that cleaned, blowing out the fuel lines, changing the fuel filter, cleaning the injectors would be a better first step. Keep in mind that the other components may also need replacing.
