Volvo: VOLVO 850 T5, volvo 850, inter cooler

Question
QUESTION: I recenly had someone put a rebuilt head on my my newly bought volvo. He failed to put on the glue that seals the cam cover. Put nothing there accept over the o rings he put some silicone. I don't know why other than that I saw that the tube was almost empty. Well, I've put 5 quarts in in one month! It leaks like crazy.
The turbo all of the sudden is not kicking all the way in. The needle only moves to about the 1:30 postion clockwise, the motor slowly climbs from there. I belive I here air dumping. Is this related to the oil leak or some other coincidental thing? Someone mentioned the posibility of a wastegate?

ANSWER: John,
An oil leak should have nothing in common with the loss of turbo power. I think that you have two different problems. You can check to see if the waste gate operates, but that is not as common a problem as a leaking intercooler hose or broken intercooler.
There is a special sealant used for the head work on the Volvo's as far as I know there are not any alternates. Part number of sealant 1161059

QUESTION: In did disconnect everything from the radiator the other day with the idea to remove it and replace it but I then put the hose back on. Does this have to do with the inter cooler. This
is the first time I see a turbo so I'm not sure about anything to do with it.

Answer
John,
There are hoses to the intercooler not the radiator. When you get the opportunity seek the help of a Volvo tech so he/she can show you the hoses and maybe make a few tests also. You'll need the techs help to take apart the head and redo the sealant. Now there is also the possibility that something did not get tightened up for the intercooler when the head was repaired. Now seek out a Volvo tech as they should know all the ins and outs of the car and get it repaired correctly.
