My Volvo's transmission is not engaging into reverse. Does this mean the tranny is on it's way out or is there a remedy for it?

How is the fluid level? Too low would cause that to happen. If the fluid is full and clean you could try a complete trans fluid flush with a cleaner to remove deposits in the valve body. If all that fails then the trans is going bad.
A good shop will have a trans fluid exchange system that hooks to the cooler lines to purge all the fluid and renew it all in one step.
