Volvo: Loud squeal in 1985 240 engine compartment, wrenchs, source of the sound

Question
Ray,
I just bought a 1985 240 gl sedan, b230f engine, automatic, and I have a problem with a loud squeal in the engine compartment.  The squeal was intermittent for a day and occured at different speeds and even when stopped.  Than the engine quit at highway speed.  I replaced the water pump and timing belt.  The fins of the pump showed signs of scraping on the engine block, so I thought I had found my squeal.  The car then started up and sounded good for about 30 seconds until the squeal came back.  I was able to start it 3 or 4 more times with the same result -- okay for 30 seconds and then squeal.  I figured out the source of the sound seemed to be in the area of the starter.  After that, it wouldn't start again, just a click but no start.  A friend advised this could be starter or transmission related.
I'd like your opinion and also (if you think it is the starter) what kind of tool set-up do you use to get the top starter bolt loose?

Answer
Matt,
You will need to make sure that the noise is in fact from the starter area and then inspect the starter and related area parts for the cause. We use wrenchs and sockets with extenions to remove the starter. Since you are not sure of the source of the noise or the area of the noise, I would advice taking the car to a shop with Volvo knowlege so someone can look at the car and hear the noise. Noises sometimes seem to be heard in a certain spot and are really located elsewhere. At times hard to find and trace.
