Volvo: 1991 Volvo 940 GLE, volvo 940 gle, volvo 940

Question
We have a 91 volvo 940 GLE, 16 valve, 2.3L with a couple of irritating issues.  It starts fine for a cold start - but if it has been running and is shut off for 1/2 hour or so it takes several turn overs to restart.  Also - first start of the day - the oil light stays on for about 5 seconds - doesn't do that any other time of the day.  Have had compression tested - oil consumption is fine - can't find the problems - can you help?

Answer
Christy,
When it stalls you have to figure out if at that time you lost spark or fuel. When restarting do you hear the fuel pumps turning on? What is the pressure? Try to read any fault codes and fix them to see if that helps. Fuel pump relays have a high failure rate, if yours is older that 4 or 5 years replace it as a precaution. Inspect the flywheel pick up, they sometimes have wires that fray and come apart. That may or may not set a fault code.
Get a Volvo or Mann oil filter and install that on the car and see if that will help the oil light. Those filters have a check valve built in so the filter will not lose its prime.
