Volvo: transmission, transmission control module, sport economy

Question
QUESTION: I have a 94 850 wagon non turbo. The winter drive mode light on the dash is flashing intermit and the sport/economy light is flashing on the console. How can I pull the codes for the trans on this model?
ANSWER: Norm,
Under hood right front is the Digital link
Stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be read off and erased in DTM 1. A short press on the button on the DLC will start the DTC read-off procedure. If the control module replies by flashing code 1-1-1 no faults have been registered, so no DTCs have been stored. If the control module replies using any other flashing code sequence it is a DTC that has been stored.
The control module can store a maximum of five DTCs. The fault must be corrected and the DTC erased before further DTCs can be stored in the transmission control module.

Erasing DTCS

It is only possible to clear the data link connector (DLC) of codes after reading off all the codes at least once and the first code stored at least twice. The procedure for erasing stored DTCs is as follows:

Ignition ON
Press the button and hold down for more than five seconds. Release the button.
Wait for the LED to light.
Press the button again and hold down for more than five seconds. Release the button.
Make sure that the DTC's have been cleared by reading off the DTCs again.

QUESTION: Thanks for your help Ray,
There seems to be no codes stored but now the car has started to stall intermit and the exhaust smells very bad. I suspect it could be a main relay os something. When the car stalls it quits right away like the key is turned off,,no stumble just cuts off. It will restart but sometimes needs a long crank with the throttle slightly open. It runs smooth on restarts with no black smoke or gas smell. I also found a leaking o ring around one of the injectors. Any help you could offer would be great,,thanks in advance,,,Norm

Answer
Norm,
Without any codes in the system I would look at the fuel pump and or the relay. Use a pressure gauage and see if the pressure drops as the car stalls. Also look to see if the rest pressure is dropping when the engine is off. Almost sound as if the engine runs out of fuel. Make sure the fuel pressure is about 2.9 bar, and stays above 1.0 bar for rest pressure.
